On Tuesday 7th February 1910,at the Depwade Petty
Sessions, Long Stratton, Superintendent F. Southgate reported that Slot
Machines had been in use in many of the local houses. When the tenants
were informed that such machines were illegal, they were immediately
removed. At the Annual Licensing Meeting held Tuesday 13th February 1940 it was reported that there were 36 fully licensed houses within the jurisdiction of the Loddon Magistrates, also 7 beer houses, 1 beer off licence and 1 wine & spirit licence. Based on the last census this was one licence to every 180 of the population. The application by four Long Stratton licensees, for an extension on alternate Tuesdays, Market Days, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., was granted. An application to extend evening hours to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays in summer months, was refused. Incidentally Feb. 1940 :- the County Agricultural Wages Committee unanimously decided to increase the wage for Norfolk Agricultural Workers by 1/6d a week, giving a minimum of 38/- a week, 48 hours to be worked in winter and 50 in summer. Overtime to be paid at 10½d on weekdays and 1s 0½d on Sundays. (38/- = £1.90 today - £2.00 had been asked for.) |
