A Coroners Inquest into the death of seaman James Utting was held here
Thursday 23rd November 1843. The deceased had returned from the Medora
on the16th November and according to his wife, always got the worse for
liquor upon his return from a voyage. He had been found lying with his
head against the wall of the BLACKAMOOR'S
HEAD, Gaol Street, his legs doubled up and blood
draining from his nose. Carried into the house he apparently recovered
sufficiently to return home, but on Wednesday 22nd November, he died.
