Found as the BROTHERS TAVERN
in the Licence Registers.
Also referenced as the BROTHERS ARMS.
On Friday 8th February 1907 and application was made to
remove the beer and wine licence of the
BROTHER TAVERN to the adjoining premises, which had been the
SOUTH QUAY DISTILLERY.
The former premises of the Distillery would make a better house, which would
be further improved. The Mission to the Seaman's Institute adjoined the Brothers and
Messrs. Lacons were negotiating with the Mission for it to be used by the
Institute.
With two or three entrances from the Row to the Distillery, the Justices
were against such a thing.
The Bottle and Jug entrance to the Brothers was
through a private entrance or corridor and there would be no more entrances
at the new location. The existing Bottle and Jug entrance was more
objectionable than one directly from the Row.
Lacons would spend £250 on the new location as well as removing an overhang
and improving the Row. The Distillery building was better adapted to
business than the Brothers. The latter then selling 143 barrels a year.
Agreeing that the Brothers was a small, inconvenient house, and might be
given up and the owners compensated, it was no justification to move to
larger premises where a bigger trade may be done. The Justices postponed a
decision for one month, expecting the brewers to give up something else.
