Formerly the CARPENTERS ARMS. On Thursday 28th September 1899 the renewal of licence was opposed owing to the previous tenant having been twice convicted. The owners, Messrs. Daniel & Sons, said they had a great deal of trouble with the tenant, but with the aid of the Sheriff, they had got rid of him. Licence renewal granted. William Benjafield applied for a music licence Monday 23rd September 1901. It was said that he had run public houses for 20 years and had been at the Great Eastern for two and a half years. The previous tenant had dropped the music licence for reasons unknown. Several residents had voiced complaint against the house for noise emanating from people `singing' in the bar. The magistrates refused the application and reminded Mr. Benjafield that his (public house) licence was only good for one year and some considered there were too many licences. Advertised TO LET, 12th May 1908 with possession from about 6th July 1908. Free for Wines and Spirits. Purchased by Steward & Patteson 29th October 1925 for £850. Became the SILVER HERRING 7th March 1969 Address as 54 Howard Street in 1875 (CARPENTERS ARMS) |
