Recorded in a document dated 8th July 1850 when conveyed between Charles Nightingale, Mary Thompson and George Jay to Edmund Wright. The inquest into the sudden death of landlord Edmund Wright was held here, Tuesday 20th September 1853. It was heard he had not been sober, day or night, for three weeks. He would regularly drink 20 pints of porter. He had returned home at three o'clock on Monday afternoon, very drunk, had gone upstairs and undressed but not gone to bed until six o'clock, where he died. On that morning his wife had given him 30 drops of laudanum as advised by the doctor. Following post mortem examination the results showed that he had died of apoplexy brought on by excessive drinking, not the result of taking laudanum. Licence application (full) by Henry Harrison refused Friday 4th September 1857, the magistrates refusing to hear any application for new licenses. Address given as East Hill Road. Sarah Harrison applied for a (full) licence Tuesday 6th September 1859. It was said that Mrs Harrison had kept the beerhouse respectfully ever since the Act had been in force (1830?) The magistrates voted eight for and thirteen against. For Sale by Auction April 1874 with possession from Michaelmas. Conveyed between Richard Wright, Susannah Harriet Page and William Holt
as recorded in documents dated 11th July 1874. Became the GREAT EASTERN c1890. |
