Sir (William) Sidney Smith 21 June 1764 -
26 May 1840.
Served in the Royal Navy with duties in the American and French
Revolutionary Wars.
In 1790 he served in the Royal Swedish Navy fighting the
Russians.
In 1793 he was serving under the British flag.
A Captain by 1795 and a Rear Admiral in November 1805.
Wellington asked him to take the surrender of the French
garrisons at Arras and Amiens following the victory at Waterloo
(June 1815).
Knighted in 1815, he never went to sea again.
