Only found 1852 & 1854........ perhaps 1865? At the Annual Licensing Day, Monday 6th September 1852, the magistrates Platten, Wales and Pitcher sat for the purpose of issuing new licenses. That of the Corn Exchange Tavern beerhouse was a new application. Magistrates Platten and Wales were of the opinion that there were already too many licenses. Mr Pitcher was of the opinion that granting of licenses increased the value of the property and led to houses being sold at inflated prices with the owner of the licence then immediately applying for a fresh one for a neighbouring house. The application was refused. (One hundred and forty-six licenses were renewed). Address seems indicate that this is the same house as previously the FREEMASONS COFFEE TAVERN 1836 FREEMASONS TAVERN to at least 1839. The CORN EXCHANGE is listed 1865 as being at Tuesday Market Place, but no licensee given. Same as the COFFEE TAVERN described in 1888? |
