At the licence transfer hearing, Monday 17th February 1851 it was
heard that an 11 year old lad named Hastings had been taken into
custody, from this house, having been permitted to play bagatelle for
money and drink. He had been charged with committing a serious felony.
The Bench commented that Mr. Scarfe, previously at the
BOARS
HEAD, could have conducted that house in a more
respectable manner and the police would be directed to keep a
strict watch on the Golden lion to ensure that no improper characters
were allowed to frequent it.
Renamed the
SAILORS HOME in 1856.
