Named in 1850 and 1856 Register of licensed houses, address as Checker Street. Address as High Street in the 1852 report below. No 97 in 1858. At the Annual Licensing Day, Monday 6th September 1852, the magistrates Platten, Wales and Pitcher sat for the purpose of issuing new licenses. That of the Jenny Lind beerhouse was a new application. Magistrates Platten and Wales were of the opinion that there were already too many licenses. Mr Pitcher was of the opinion that granting of licenses increased the value of the property and led to houses being sold at inflated prices with the owner of the licence then immediately applying for a fresh one for a neighbouring house. The application was refused. (One hundred and forty-six licenses were renewed). Advertised To Let, 29th September 1855."Where an excellent business has been carried on for the last five years in the Ale and Porter Trade. This concern stands well for a Cook Shop or Greengrocery to be added to the Beer Trade" Apply H. T. Sturley, Brewer and Spirit Merchant, Lynn (Jenny Lind, vocalist 1820 to 1887) |
