On the night of 29th May 1852, the police discovered, at twenty minutes past twelve o'clock, fifty boys and girls in the house, with beer on the table for their use. Robert Emmerson, keeper of the Jolly Sawyers was severely reprimanded and ordered to pay 8s expenses. The police were advised to look closely into such scandalous proceedings. |
