Admiral Vernon took the port of Porto
Bello (Portobello) from the Spanish in 1739.
He is credited with the introduction in 1740, of watered down rum rations to his crew.
Vernon apparently had the nickname of `Old Grog' and so the reduced rum ration took on the
name of Grog.
