The FOLKES ARMS then the DUKE OF ABERCORN by 1869. Became the SANDRINGHAM RESTAURANT c1884 and known as the SANDRINGHAM after 1905 In 1912 James Nesbit, a former sea captain was away at the time of the 1912 licensing sessions (12th February) he had been at sea on a voyage on the ship Haslington, having departed on 22nd November 1911. He had apparently been feeling run down and thought a sea voyage would assist his recovery. Unfortunately his ship had been trapped in ice in one of the ports. Mr. Nesbit, a quiet and respectable man had authorised Mr. Woodwark to appear in his name. Mr. Nesbit had in fact landed in England the previous day and could have made the court had it sat a day later. The licence was renewed. Closed and demolished 1968. Freehouse licence held by last landlord, E. A. Sillis until February 1983 when the magistrates ordered that a good reason be given for renewal, otherwise it must be surrendered. |
