On Monday 20th August 1866, Samuel Kerrison was charged and found guilty of
knowingly allowing eleven prostitutes to assemble at his house.
Mr. Kerrison said that he had kept a quiet house and no complaints had been
made by the neighbours.
After being fined 10s 6d and 19s 6d costs, his defence argued that the
charges were invalid since the complaint did not say if was laid on the
behalf of the Paving Commissioners, or the Mayor or burgesses.
After much discussion the Magistrates amended the information, after the
conviction under protest from the defendant.
