ALBY - HORSE SHOES
c1930 - a Bullards house

Probably dates from after 1824 since not shown on Enclosure map of that date.

Address as East of Goose Lane 1851

Goose Lane is shown in 1824 as being Dolphin Lane.

Maria Pearce, who is given in trade directories as licensee from 1864 to 1869, gave evidence in a trial held 1st April 1857, regarding a burglary at the nearby Gunton Hall. In her evidence she stated that she ran the Alby Horse Shoes. (Frederick Woolsey is still named here in the 1864 trade directory, but he had died in early 1863 and it seems that Mrs Pearce took over soon after that event.)

Host Frederick Woollsey provided an excellent dinner, in his usual style, to the 114 members of the Loyal Suffield Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of the Manchester Unity, on Wednesday 31st July 1861.

"George Craske played there a long while on a Sunday night, when Archie Wright had it.
When he packed it in he `left his bleedin' accordion there"
