-

( It seems Cornelius Bull was Master of the Bark, Maria in 1832. The only Cornelius Bull identified after 1835 is Master of the Brig "Delphin" of Tonsberg, Norway. Found 1839.)

In July 1834, publican Joseph Neale of Brancaster, gave evidence in the defence of Charles Oakes, Robert Allen and James Ward who had been accused of stealing items to the value of £46 17s from a Smack named Earl Of Wemyss. When cross examined and his evidence questioned, Neale said that he had previously "been summoned before the Magistrates and fined; I was tipsy once, but they swore I was drunk the other time when I was not; I was not drunk in coming from Fring Fair; I am not very often drunk; I was not drunk yesterday."
A second report of his reply was "Have been fined for being drunk; was not drunk on this occasion; might be fresh; but was not so drunk that i could not walk; will swear to the best of my knowledge I was not lead home drunk that night."
( After a summing up lasting nearly two hours, the Jury took one minute to find the three Not Guilty, one remarking that he had made up his mid two hours earlier.)
