As Mr. Frederick Cook applied for his licence on Wednesday 11th
October 1899, one character witness said that Mr. Cook was too good
to run a public house and attempts had been made to dissuade him.
The Chairman of the Licensing Committee answered that they required
"them as could be got" and the licence was granted.
