Mr. OLIVER |
In about 1831, Mr. Oliver, a labourer, was renting his house at £2 10s
per annum and had been doing so for several years. By 1832 the property
had been purchased by a Mr. Sexton, a Baker, for £60 and he had spent a
further £40 on repairs. The rent was then increased to £7 per year. Mr.
Oliver then opened his house as a Beer Shop and was threatened with
eviction, or face a rent of £10. At Christmas 1833, Mr. Sexton seized
£10 for the rent to Michaelmas and a further £3 for the period to
Christmas.
Before the Chief Justice, March 1834, the Jury found in favour of Mr.
Oliver for an unfair and un-agreed rent increase and awarded £15 in
damages. |
