On Tuesday 21st November 1944, two American
bombers collided in mid-air and crashed into a farmstead at Carleton
Rode. The ensuing fire spread into six corn stacks and a Dutch barn. The fire raged for two days and was attended by firemen from Attleborough, Bury St. Edmonds, Yarmouth, Pulham, Long Stratton, Beccles, Wymondham and other places. Relief pumps arrived from Diss. There were no civilian casualties, but the nearby house of Mrs. Clarke was damaged by the initial explosion. |
