Cawston was a Manor of Anne Boleyn which passed to Queen Elizabeth I. A map of that period a shows a building to the north of the parish marked as "Her Majesty's Brew House" Shown on Faden's 1797 map as BEAR HOUSE FARM. Found as Docking or Docking Farm 1836 - 1841 Named BEERHOUSE FARM from 1851 census. No firm evidence to suggest that ever operated as a public house. Perhaps the BEAR was selling beer before 1800 and was close to HOUSE FARM?? Bryant's map of 1826 shows a Beer House on the main road from Norwich, heading north. (This is unusual, only major inns are usually identified) It is north of the junction with the Cawston to Aylsham road. The Woodrow Inn is shown south of this crossroads. It is east of what became Beerhouse Farm. Could it be that a beerhouse operated on the main highway, being owned by Beerhouse Farm? See COCK and CROWN |
