The inquest into the death of Robert Harris of West Lynn, was held on Friday
30th August 1839. He had been drinking at the Shetland Pony and had
scuffled, in a playful manner, with the landlord of the house, Painter.
Ultimately Harris was thrown down and Painter fell with his knees upon
Harris's body, rupturing some intestines. This was on the previous
Wednesday, Harris died of his injuries on the Monday following (28th August). A verdict of Manslaughter was brought in by the Coroner's Jury and
Painter was taken into custody, but afterwards made his escape and was
missing for some time. He was later apprehended.
(The report does not give a Christian name so it is uncertain if this is
the same Mr. Painter who appears at the house in 1846.)
Thomas Rayner was ordered to pay 7s costs on Monday 22nd August 1887 for
having tethered a pony on the highway on 3rd August 1887.

The renewal of licence was strongly objected to by Mr. Thompson, the
occupier of the adjoining farm, who also hired the house with the farm.
Landlord of the public house, Mr. Bennington was not present in court
and had not made an application for renewal. It was also said that
Bennington had notice to quit.
Since it was deemed that Mr. Thompson was the tenant and did not wish
for a licence, no one could get a licence for it. No licence was
granted.
