In the 1880's and 1890's concerts & auctions were held in the Assembly Rooms.
In 1886
the headmaster of the school noted that 41 of his pupils were absent. They were playing
truant and attending an auction. The headmaster remarked that `such little ones can have
no business in such places'.
On 29th May 1889, the Vicar the Rev. J. W. Walker and his wife, returned
from their honeymoon in the West of England. The Railway Station, Board
School and the Duke's Head were adorned with bunting to welcome
them..........
It was reported August 1889 that the old house had been demolished and a
more commodious inn had been erected. The new building being a great
ornament to the village.
