During the latter part of the week ending Saturday 10th February 1894,  "Very destructive gales" raged all over the country and were of exceptional severity on the Sunday and Monday. Tiles were hurled from the roof of the Cross Keys at Shelfanger and a portion of the thatched roof of the Rampant Horse was denuded.

It was reported 27th April 1894 that the Rampant Horse had recently had a very narrow escape from being destroyed by fire. Smoke had been seen coming through the thatched roof. The landlord, Mr. Wells, climbed a ladder to the roof, which was very dilapidated from recent gales, and by entering into the false ceiling, discovered that part of the chimney had fallen in. The prompt action undoubtedly prevented the house from burning to the ground.
