It was announced 18th October 1740 :-
`At the THREE TUNNS TAVERN at Diss in Norfolk is laid a large stock of wines and without doubt with
a good usage. John Stannard
N.B. I have very good accommodation for gentlemen
and their horses.'
~
At about two o'clock
in the morning of Wednesday 27th March, John Garrard, who was returning
to Ipswich, having been employed to convey a person in a cart to Diss,
mistook in the darkness the county river for the road. Soon immersed in
water, the horse, worth £25, was drowned. Mr. and Mrs Houchen of the Three
Tuns received the exhausted, wet and cold Mr. Garrard with the greatest
humanity and attention and accommodated him with every comfort of which he
stood so much in need.
