This property was a shop and Post Office.
In 1883 and 1888 Mr. Pestell is described as a shopkeeper, no mention of
beer, by 1890 he is given as a shopkeeper and beer retailer.
The occupant was described in 1906 as an Off-beerhouse keeper.
On 17th October 1906, a person was observed to enter the shop and be
served beer, in a mug which held about one and a-half pints. The man
then purchased a postage stamp, went outside the door, drank his beer
and hung the mug on a branch, but was still `within the grounds' before
leaving.
The person who observed the event was Mr. D. A. Robertson, an officer of
the Inland Revenue. He then entered the house and asked Mrs. Pestell's
daughter for some beer. The mug was retrieved, washed and he was served,
being advised he must drink it off
the premises, outside on the road.
When confronted about the first man, Mrs. Harriett Pestell said that such practices as
drinking outside, but not on the road, had been the custom for 20 years.
On Tuesday 18th December 1906 it was heard that the late Mr. Pestell had been cautioned about
such matters and Mrs. Pestell had
frequently been cautioned by Superintendent Lovick about permitting
`this sort of thing'.
Mrs. Harriet Pestle of Edingthorpe, said by letter,
to the North Walsham Annual licensing Session, Tuesday 12th February
1907, that she would not be renewing her beer licence, as `with such
restrictions she could not make it answer`. The
statement was met with laughter.
