1856 entry in directory by Melville. In 1851 Robert Horsley (33), Gun maker, is located at Tuns Street - One entry from the Brewers Arms. In 1856 (Craven directory) & 1858 (Post Office directory) Robert Holsley is dealing in guns and beer - in Quaker's Lane In 1861 Robert Horsley is at Quaker Street - still a gun maker and again one entry away from the Brewers Arms Last found as a beerhouse in 1864. Possibly premises known as the RAG & LOUSE, a splendid name unearthed by contributor Christopher Pipe. Could the house name relate to the cleaning of gun barrels or perhaps to the class of accommodation offered either at the Black Horse or the Brewers Arms? Thanks 19.02.08 to Leslie Robert Linford-Hazell for the possible connection...... |
