It was reported that on Monday 30th September 1850, James
Flowers, landlord of a beerhouse near the railway terminus, was charged
by the police of suffering beer to be consumed in his house after ten
p.m.
Pleading guilty to the fact that beer was consumed, Mr. Flowers
explained that those present were railway officials lodging at the
house, and they were being treated with an extra glass in celebration of
his recent marriage. Since the house had previously well conducted, the
magistrates dismissed the case.
(Is James an error for Robert or could this report apply to a different
house?)
