William Newton is given in July 1841 as a Beer Shop keeper in Felthorpe. On Saturday 23rd December 1843, Policeman H40 claimed that he had seen, on the previous Tuesday, beer being consumed within the house . It had been served by Mrs. Newton contrary to the license to only sell beer by retail. Mrs. Newton said that the man concerned had arrived with the policeman and it had been a trap. She had not invited the man in and he had snatched the beer from her. The magistrates considered the charge proven, but since it was a first offence, Mr. William Newton was fined a total of £1-2s including costs. |
