11th April 1843 - Elizabeth and John Purdy, Brewers, Maltsters, Farmers
and Seed Merchants assigned all their personal Estate and Effects to
Messrs. Thomas Wrightup, of Ashill, John Margarson of Wendling, William
Purdy of Great Witchingham and Henry May Waller of Foulsham, upon trust
for the equal benefit of their Creditors.
On Monday and Tuesday, 24th and 25th April, all the Live and Dead
Farming Stock, Brewing Plant and Stock in Trade of Mrs. E. and Mr. R.
Purdy were to be Sold by Auction. The Stock in Trade included a quantity
of ale in barrels, 220 coombs of malt, a pocket of hops, 50 coombs of
rye grass seeds, 35 bushels of red clover, 22 bushels of cow grass, and
4 cwt of long yellow beet seed.
In advertisement dated 23rd May 1843, Merchants, Maltsters and Brewers
were advised that the Maltings, Granaries and Brewery, plus Private
Dwelling, all late in the occupation of Mrs. Elizabeth Purdy and Son,
for the past twenty years and upwards, were To Be Let.
To be entered Immediately or at Michaelmas.
Mr. J. Blade announced 9th December 1843 that he had taken the business
lately carried on by Mrs. Purdy and Son.
The Brewing Plant, Household Furniture, Bay Pony, excellent Light Cart, two
Light Luggage Carts and other effects including a stack of hay were to be
sold by auction Tuesday 10th October 1848.
The equipment included a five-barrel copper, two beer coolers, one being 7ft
x 8ft and the other 9ft x 3ft 9in. There were a large number of barrels
suggesting a very reasonable business had been enjoyed. There were 22
four-and-a-half gallon, 35 of nine gallon, 35 eighteen gallon and 35
thirty-six gallon casks. Six dozen stone bottles and ten dozen porter
bottles as well as wine and beer glasses.
