Leased for one year by Francis Fisher, innholder, to Shelford Bidwell and Leonard Bidwell for the sum 5 shillings of good and lawful money of Great Britain as indenture dated 9th October 1799. Sapper William Alfred Smith R.E., the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, of the Swan Inn, married Miss Hilda May Fisher 10th June 1942. The reception for 45 guests was held at the Inn. On Sunday 6th September 1942, four men entered the house and asked for drinks. Being sort of beer, landlord William H. Smith refused to serve them. They left, but took three glass mugs with them, which they smashed in the street. Police-constable Gaskin observed the men leaving at 9:30 pm and heard the sound of breaking glass. Before Lord Albemarle on Monday 5th October 1942, the only two persons charged were:- Daniel Coleman who was fined £1 on each of charge of breaking the three glasses, plus 12s 9d costs. Joseph McGrath was fined 25s on each charge with 12s 6d costs. Mr. W.
