On 29th September 1870, at about midnight, Police-constable Failes met a
horse and cart, without a driver. Further down the road he found a man's hat
and further still he came across Mr. George Burton who was drunk and did not
know what had become of his horse.
He appeared in court Monday 3rd October 1870, charged of drunkenness.
Mr. Burton was then called to the bar again, this time accused of wilfully
and knowingly aiding one John Burton of removing goods from the
OSTRICH INN,
Wells. Mr. R. Carpenter, agent to Messrs. Eyre & Co., brought the charges.
Found guilty, a fine of Thirty Pounds and costs was imposed.
