No evidence of being licensed to sell alcohol Tenders were invited July 1879 for the erection of the Harleston Coffee Tavern. The Committee would not bind themselves to accept the lowest or any Tender. On Friday 5th March 1880 a general meeting of the Harleston Coffee Company decided upon the arrangements for starting the establishment and announced that the building was to be known as the CROWN COFFEE TAVERN. 25th September 1880 - WANTED, a Manager, a Married Man preferred. Good references required. Apply to the Secretary, Coffee Tavern, Harleston. Described January 1882 as being in the hands of shareholders and since it had not been at all financially successful, no dividend had yet been paid. It was rumoured that the institution was about to be taken over by a private individual. In April 1882 it was decided to start a Lending Library at the Coffee Tavern. The first anniversary of the Coffee Tavern was celebrated Monday 19th January 1883. Mr. & Mrs Johnson provided an excellent tea to upwards of sixty people. Hotel Proprietors and Others were advised by the Liquidators of the Harleston Coffee Tavern Company Ltd., that the contents would be sold, without reserve, on Thursday 11th September 1890. 7 marble top tables, 4 deal tables, 6 railed seats, 24 Windsor chairs, 6 elbow chairs, tea and coffee urns, brewers, earthenware and other effects were included. The Freehold Business Property, known as the Harleston Coffee Tavern was also to be Sold by Auction Thursday 11th September 1890. Described as commandingly situated in the centre of town, having a frontage of about 38½ feet to the Thoroughfare and Garden to the rear with a frontage of about 34 feet to Broad Street. |
