1897 Image from the collection of the late Percy Rush. Shown with permission Full licence of the CROWN transferred here January 1872. On the evening of Thursday 16th December 1875, a show of dogs and monkeys took place in the yard of the Railway Tavern. The promoters of the event had not been allowed to erect their booth in the Market Place owing to the ground being covered in snow. Owing to the weather only a small audience gathered, but the performance was such that those who attended felt amply repaid. Between 20 and 30 dogs and monkeys appeared on stage and their clever performances caused the utmost fun and amusement. The rating assessment value went from £16 to £40 in May 1898. A licence for the police dance, to be held October 1948, was not objected to by Inspector George Grainger, when applied for by Mr. F. A. Spinlowe on Friday 17th September 1948. The police again offered no objection to Mr. Spinlove having an occasional licence, from 8 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday 29th March 1949, for the Harleston Divisional Police sports club dance, to be held at the Corn Hall. Closed and converted to 5 apartments. |
