The funeral of William Ellwood, "who had kept
the Mermaid, Hedenham for many years", took place on Wednesday, 20th
November 1943. He was 69 years old.

In September 1848 the Hedenham Rosary was described as a delightful spot to
which the proprietor had added a very valuable and extensive collection of
hollyhocks, a tribe of plants hitherto little cultivated in this country,
but which, if other growers are equally successful with Mr. Bircham, will
become a favourite ornament of our gardens. The Rosary having about 4000
plants, 1000 of which were on show, many having spikes of three feet and
above exhibiting a mass of bloom.
The Nursery Grounds, called the ROSARY,
with good Roadside Inn attached and 30 Acres of Arable and Meadow Land, in
occupation of Mr. R. B. Bircham for upwards of thirty years, was offered To
Let from Michaelmas 1867, owing to the death of the late occupier.
October 12th 1867 : - Roger Roberts, late of Hempnall (LORD NELSON)
requested all those in debt to him to settle with him at the Hedenham
Mermaid and all those with with any claim or demand to send their
particulars to same.
Part of the Hedenham Hall Estate For Sale by Auction, Saturday, 22nd
June 1907. Included in the sale, as well as the Hall, were the Mermaid,
Ditchingham Cottage, Hedenham Lodge, Six Farms, and Thirty Cottages.
