On Wednesday 16th December 1903, George Thompson was examined for bankruptcy.
He had debts amounting to £140 5s.
He had worked for 10 years as a manager at the paper making department of the Carrow Works, but in 1901 the department was closed. He received £200 as compensation and opened up an office in Norwich as a paper merchant. The business did not pay so he took the King's Head.
He quickly fell into arrears with the brewery and was given notice to quit at Michaelmas 1903.
He had spent £40 in improving the premises, particularly the bowling green, but had not been reimbursed. When he left he was disgusted with the place and left the fixtures for the brewers to help themselves. He had sold his furniture to settle some of his debt, but that had only raised £10.
