c1915 image by Vernon Gladden. Walter Barnes Ayers and family c1890. Image thanks to Lorna Bellamy.
It is believed that the house was built as the WHEATSHEAF and owned by Thomas Grounds. The original Angel stood to the left of the above house and identified on a map of 1844. By 1847 the name Angel appears to have been transferred to the above building. Offered for sale by auction Saturday 9th December 1780 including Stables, Buildings and 5.5 acres of land. The yearly rent was £17/10/0 on 3 year agreement. In 1890 Walter Ayers is given at the ROYAL OAK, no other record of such a house in Hoe has been found. The name seems to be in error since Mr. Ayers is named at the ANGEL in 1888 and 1892.
Referred for compensation 1st April 1932.
Owner and licensee Edward C. Keith was awarded £250 compensation for the
closure of the house. |
