Built 1846 and opened in 1847 as the NEW INN.
This was the first development, in open fields, of Henry Le Strange's vision of a new
holiday resort.
Mr. Thomas Watson, of the Royal Hotel, was riding his pony gig through the
village on Friday 10th June 1853 when the pony was suddenly startled and
stopped. This threw Mr. Watson and his lady companion out of the gig. The
lady was unhurt but Mr. Watson fractured his right arm near the shoulder.
The ROYAL HOTEL in 1854,
1856, 1858 & 1863 and given as a
Commercial Hotel
Became the GOLDEN LION HOTEL by 1864.
