The Castle, at some time after closure, is shown
behind the sign for the Royal Oak which is out of view to the right, set
well back from the road.
Mrs. Whiter is named at the
GOLDEN BALL in
1864 and 1868.
Originally a beerhouse.
Full licence application by beerhouse keeper Margaret Whiter denied on
31st August 1870.
The licence of Mrs `Whiting' is noted as `Requiring attention'
- August 1871
Ale-house licence granted 27th August 1873.
Advertised March 1882 as being To Let with Immediate possession.

Objection to the renewal of licence was made on Friday 16th February
1906.
At the adjourned licensing session held Friday 9th March 1906 it was
said by Police Sergeant Powles that the house was the least suitable of
the three houses in the village of 466 persons. The tenant was aged 65
and had been at the house for eighteen years and would encounter
difficulty in securing other employment if the house were to be closed.
Licence renewed on condition that gates at the back were to be kept
unlocked.
