Herbert Augustus Cook took over the Bell when his wife's grandmother, Martha Smith, died in 1914.
In that year, Mr. Cook purchased a car and provided the first hire car in North Lopham.
He then served with the A.S.C. (Army Service Corps),in Palestine and Syria during WWI.

Upon retirement in 1963, Mr. & Mrs. Cook moved into Cherry Tree Cottage.
