At midnight on 24th October 1887, Police-constables Claxton and Page saw
lights on in several rooms and heard people talking within. They knocked on
the door and received the reply "You are not coming in; there's no one want
you". The policemen watched the house for a quarter of an hour and then
Claxton gained entry through a rear door. Inside he found the licensee and
his two sons. James Neal said he had refused entry since he believed it was
a tramp knocking on the door.
