Only found in the 1872 directory by J. G. Harrod & Co. Five licensees are listed and three of them can be placed at other houses with some certainty. The fourth, George Cross, is given at a beerhouse but it is not named. He was at the CARPENTERS ARMS/ JOINERS ARMS / COMPASSES from at least 1845 to 1869, but a different occupier is shown in the 1871 census. Could it be that the CAMPS INN is an error for CARPENTERS ARMS and the George Cross entry in the same directory is out of date? In the 1871 census there are two entries under the name Butler. William Butler aged 23 is a harness maker at the Turnpike. William G Butler aged 53 is a currier, also with an address at the Turnpike. |
