From Ken Walpole of North Walsham, 2004            (CH B4-3-13b)

'I was brought up in a house opposite the Vernon Arms at Southrepps. I was not a 'pub person' at the time so I rarely went in the place. However, when I lived in West Norfolk I was listening to the wireless one Sunday morning about 1954/5 and I heard a programme of music and dancing from the Vernon. Ben Baxter, the landlord, sang a song about the 'Maids of Australia', Dick Hewitt did his shuffle/tap-dancing, and Les Bane sang. When I came to live in North Walsham I became friendly with Les and he told me all about it. He has passed on now.'

Note from Paul Marsh: 'The program was almost certainly 'Country Magazine' which was broadcast on Sunday mornings between 1942 and 1955. As such, it would have been a live broadcast from the pub.'

This is a CD of a 1976 Folktrax cassette Ftx 234, 'As I Walked Out', recorded in the Vernon Arms, Southrepps, with 30 songs from Ben Baxter. Further details at CH 4-3-8b.

There is a long, typed article entitled 'In Days Gone By' from Audrey Edith Veness at CH B4-3-1a
