Built c1800, the house still survives as a private dwelling.
As shown on
Bryant's 1826 map - to the North of Stanford towards Little Cressingham (Cressingham
Parva)
Actually located within the parish of Little Cressingham.
In the early 19th century there was a very expensive dispute between Lord
Walsingham and Lord Clermont regarding the boundaries between Stanford & Little
Cressingham A criminal indictment proceeded Saturday
23rd March 1811 in the form of the King v Lord Clermont (William Charles
Fortescue Lord Viscount Clermont), who was charged of an assault on
Sarah Lumley, widow, of Saham Toney. The assault was said to have been
of a most violent, cruel and outrageous kind and injuries were
corroborated by a surgeon. . In defence it was attempted to discredit
Mrs. Lumley's evidence altogether. Lord Clermont's steward, master of
the Clermont Arms public-house, in Saham Toney and a
blacksmith, of the same parish, both said they disbelieved her oath. The
jury found the Lord Clermont Guilty and the sentence of the Court was
for him to pay 50 marks to the King, and to be imprisoned until the fine
was paid; which was instantly done.
The tenant in 1816 was Robert Phenix (sic)
as mentioned in the Hilborough Estate records.
