At midnight, on
Wednesday 15th October 1873, Joseph Simpson absconded,
taking "£600 in notes and a considerable sum in gold". His
numerous creditors were "left in the lurch".
Simpson travelled to Manchester. On
Sunday 19th October the police discovered Mrs. Simpson in
Salford. Without any resort to indecency, she was ordered to
remove her stays, where £60 in notes were artfully
concealed. Mr. Simpson was found hiding in a cottage in an
extreme suburb of Manchester, but only had £10 in his
possession. It was discovered that he had deposited £570 in
a bank and left the bank-book, wrapped up in a parcel, at a
Salford beer-shop.
Mr. Simpson was returned to Terrington
on 18th October, along with the money; he settled his debts.
In consequence, proceedings for fraud and bankruptcy were
dropped and he was allowed to return to Manchester that
evening. |
