On Saturday 3rd August 1867, Hannah Youngs sued clerk Benjamin Chenery
for the sum of £2 11s for unpaid bar bills.
Mr. Chenery admitted the debt but His Honour insisted that the value of
spirits be separated from the malt liquors (Ale). It was discovered
that the entire sum for gin was £1 12s which the defendant usually had
in pints at a time.
Reminding all that debts for spirits could only be claimed for sales of
less than one reputed quart, at a time, the learned Judge said only 19s
must be paid, but if the defendant was an honest man, he would settle
the whole debt.
Valued 25.07.1889 at £1225.
