On Friday 5th May 1905,
Mr. F. W. Potter, trading as Moss & Potter, Wine & Spirit Merchants,
applied for a licence allowing the sale of bottles of ales and stouts in
half-dozens rather than the minimum of three dozens as allowed by the
current licence. The only opposition to the application was from the
Free Church Council of Thetford, with a memorial signed by 40 persons.
In support was a memorial signed by 350 responsible persons including 13
clergymen, 5 magistrates, 2 doctors, 3 solicitors, 6 estate agents and
even total abstainers who believed that it was better for these articles
to be purchased at a shop than a public-house.
Having made 4 or 5 previous applications, Mr.
Potter was again disappointed as the magistrates favoured the memorial
from the Free Church Council rather than the memorial in support.
Application denied. |
