On the morning of Sunday 30th December 1849 several persons were discovered drinking in the house at illegal hours. At the hearing the following day, it was also disclosed that the persons found had also brought into the house their cattle, corn and families. They were all from the neighbourhood and were much alarmed by the high tides and had sought shelter. The Clerk of the Magistrates confirmed that there had been much concern in the area and that on Saturday, he had sent 150 men from Wisbech to maintain the river banks.
