On Monday 4th September 1871 an application was made for re-licensing
of the KING WILLIAM IV, Walpole St. Andrew, a beerhouse.
In 1870 the house had been valued at £7 18s 9d, just 1s 3d below the
amount enabling renewal of licence. In consequence the licence had
lapsed for one year.
The house had been licensed since 1854 and the 1871 tenant had been
there for 23 years without one case of misconduct.
In opposition to the request, one magistrate said the house was within
thirty or forty yards of another.
The application was refused.
