Before the Magistrates on Wednesday 12th June 1872, licensee George Stebbings alleged eleven cases of Liberal Malpractice at the last Municipal Elections.
One of the defendants was George Holditch, a merchant and magistrate for the borough.
It was claimed that treating had occurred at the time of the election with free beer offered (by William Freeman, a clerk to Mr. Holditch) to anybody and everybody who called at the house on the day of the election.
Whatever evidence was presented, His Honour, in a calm and passionate summing up, found the case in favour of the defendant. A verdict that was received with applause.
The next case of Stebbings v Murrell, corrupt treating, was proved and a 40s penalty paid.
The remainder of cases were adjourned by consent.
