On Tuesday 26th June 1849, Leonard Brooke appeared to answer
the charge that he had suffered gambling on his premises in the form of
skittles. Brooke admitted the charge and confirmed that the
offence would not occur again since he had put the skittles to the
flames. He then presented a petition signed by the inhabitants, which
spoke highly of him and general good order of the house.
The penalty was mitigated to 10s and costs which was immediately paid.
It was reported 12th January 1861 that George Pooley (21) labourer pleaded
guilty to obtaining by false pretences, two pints of beer and one
quarter of rum, the property of Mr Robert Riches at West Dereham – one
month imprisonment with hard labour.
