According to Purchas, the building on Railway Road, which became the
Wells Library in 1949, was said to have been the site of licensed premises
and shows a datestone of 1759.
~
Trustees of the Wesleyan Church purchased the site from miller Thomas Dewing
of Little Walsingham for 10/- of lawful money.
It is said that a chapel was then newly erected on the site.
The Rose & Crown does not appear in 1799 licence register.
1759 datestone may be reclaimed material.
However, Wells Manor Court Records include the
WEAVERS' SHICKLE in early 1700's later to be the
WOOLLEN CARD and then the
ROSE & CROWN.
